Savoury Pear Chutney recipe

This easy peasy pear chutney is a great way to use up a glut of pears in your garden. It makes a lovely alternative to apple sauce or apple chutney, too.

  • 1.25kg pears
  • 400g tomatoes
  • 1 cooking apple
  • 1 onion
  • 200g each caster sugar and brown sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • 450ml white wine vinegar
  • 1 thumb-size piece root ginger, grated or minced

  1. Peel, core and dice the pears. Remove the skin from the tomatoes and dice, then peel, core and dice the apple and finely dice the onion.

  2. Place the tomatoes, apple, onion, caster sugar, brown sugar, salt, vinegar and ginger into a large saucepan. Simmer gently for one hour until thick and syrupy.

  3. Add the pears and cook for another 35-45 minutes until tender, then leave to cool and spoon into sterilised jars.

You can also make this recipe with tinned pears - drain them of their liquid and cook them for about ten minutes with the rest of the ingredients. This recipe makes about 750g of chutney.
