Apple Chutney recipe

This gently spiced apple chutney makes a lovely change from the usual apple sauce. Serve it with roast pork and crackling for a delicious roast dinner or serve it with cheese and crackers for a light lunch.

  • 1.5kg cooking apples
  • 750g brown sugar
  • 500g raisins
  • 1 onion
  • 750ml apple cider vinegar
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 tsp. mustard powder
  • 1 tsp. ground ginger

  1. Peel, core and dice the apples. Finely chop the onion.

  2. Combine the diced apples, sugar, raisins, onion, vinegar, salt, pepper, mustard powder and ground ginger in a large saucepan. Bring to the boil.

  3. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 35-45 minutes until thick and syrupy. Leave to cool and then spoon into sterilised jars.

Omit the raisins if you like and just add more apples or onions. This recipe makes around 2 standard 450g jar-fulls of chutney, with a little left over to eat straight away!
